The mean Forks weather gave us a hint that the coast would not be sunnier today than it was yesterday, minimizing the temptation to get back to the ocean. So we simply drove North, stopped to admire the blue color of Lake Crescent, then stopped again at Marymere Falls Information Center. We made a 180 degrees and headed back to Sol Duc after (surprisingly) the ranger told us that she would rather hike the Sol Duc Falls trail than Marymere Falls trail if she only had to choose one. The trail was by no means difficult, Lida found it really boring. The falls were not extremely spectacular - I wonder how dissapointing would the hike to Marymere Falls have been. Some tourists showed me a map according to which the Lovers Lane Trail would get back to the parking lot on a different route. After hiking way longer than we expected, we ended up at the Sol Duc Resort, a couple of miles away from the parking lot. Being pressed by the time, I ran to get the car and picked up Lida on the way. Our next target was the Hurricane Ridge. The drive up was nice and the Olympic Mountains panorama at the end of the road was amazing. The wildlife was incredibly friendly - most likely the human presence was not seen as a danger. We didn't hike any trail because we underestimated the amount of time we had available. We ended up in Port Angeles one hour sooner than we should have. We spent that hour along the Strait of Juan de Fuca. We made it to Bainbridge Island right on time for the ferry that would cross the Puget Sound during the sunset. Unexpectedly, Lida considered this the highlight of the whole trip. |
This is part of our trip to Olympic National Park:
